SubscribeWhen meditation doesn't work for you
"You're all signed up. Classes start next week." said the lady on the phone. I was in my car, parked in front of a bakery where I was going to meet my friends, wondering how many hours a week I should set aside to finish the course in time. And this was February 2020.
I started the 6-month health coaching certification program with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, right around the time when the whole world came to a halt. The program had a part on meditation. I've never been big on meditation. It doesn't work for me. Yet, the breathing aspect of meditation grabbed my attention.
The a-ha moment came when I read Breath by James Nestor. Around the same time, I got certified as a breathing coach with Yogabody. I started researching, reading, and learning. The more I learned, the more fascinating breathing became. I then completed another certification program with Oxygen Advantage.
Somewhere along the way, it dawned on me that by re-learning how to breathe properly, I was helping myself cope with my biggest fear: not being able to breathe.
Having control over my breath means having control over myself:
- I don’t feel like running out of air when I talk for longer than five minutes.
- I don’t feel like my heart is beating in my head when I go up two flights of stairs.
- When I get agitated, I know how not to feed into the vicious cycle of anxiety.
Learning the intricacies of breathing has helped me realize how amazing the human body is. And I hope to spark your interest in this vital function that you repeat all day, every day.
You wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to increase your car’s gas mileage. Why would you not do the same for your breathing efficiency?
